Q: How do I get my child free tutoring services?
Click here for details on this process!
A: In 2002, the Federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was passed which gives parents/guardians of children going to underperforming schools the opportunity to receive free tutoring services to help raise their skills in English/Language Arts and Math. Click here for more information
Q: How do I know if my child qualifies for free tutoring services? A: Every child who attends a Title I School which is in need of improvement and who receives free lunch is eligible to receive FREE tutoring services from TestQuest. The Application Process:
A: SES, or Supplemental Education Services, is a FREE program offered to students attending low performing schools. In 2002, the Federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was passed which gives parents/guardians of children going to underperforming schools the opportunity to receive free tutoring services to help raise their skills in English/Language Arts and Math.
Q: How much will tutoring cost? A: Our SES services are completely FREE. As long as your child attends a qualifying school and receives free lunch, they are eligible for TestQuest services at no cost. If your child does not qualify, we offer affordable, income-sensitive rates for private tutoring. Please call us for further information at 212-398-2357.
Q: What do I need to get started? A: In order to get started, please make sure to fill out your child’s free lunch application. You will not be able to receive free services without this form. You must then fill out a provider selection form which you can get from your school’s Parent Coordinator. Turn it back in to the school and we will contact you within 3-4 weeks.
Q: What if my child doesn’t qualify? A: We offer private home tutoring to all families at an extremely affordable rate! If you don’t qualify to receive our services through your school or other social service agency, this may be a great option for you. Our private tutoring costs are significantly lower than the average going rate AND we will send a tutor to your home.
Q: I asked my Parent Coordinator about getting TestQuest tutoring services but he/she told me that TestQuest was not a provider in the school. Can I still receive TestQuest services? A: Yes you can. Since TestQuest offers one-on-one services in the home, you as a parent have the right to choose any provider you desire for your child. You must speak with your school’s parent coordinator to get an application for services.
Q: Are TestQuest services available for ELL, Special Ed. students, or students with disabilities? A: Yes. In fact, we embrace the opportunity to work with all types of learners. The one-on-one tutoring model is particularly successful with ELL, Special Ed. students, and students with disabilities. Since the tutoring takes place within the privacy of your home, those children with special needs can receive the personal attention that is often lacking within the course of a regular school day.
Q: What is the advantage of a teacher coming to my home? A: Research has proven that the one-on-one tutoring model is one of the most successful methods for achieving academic gains. Having a tutor come and teach your child within the privacy of your home allows for specific attention to your child’s needs. It often allows children to feel more comfortable asking questions and ultimately instills confidence and enthusiasm for learning. This model also allows for parental/guardian involvement in the learning process. We encourage parents/guardians to sit and learn alongside their children, making this a family experience.
Q: How long do tutoring sessions last? A: Our one-on-one program entitles you to 40 total hours of tutoring. TestQuest requests a minimum of two hours for each tutoring session. We recommend at least two sessions per week for optimal results. However you can set the schedule as best fits your family’s needs. Generally our 40 hour program will be spaced out over a three month period. Our tutors are available to you after school, evenings, weekends, and holidays (except summer vacation).
Q: What is my role in this process? A: TestQuest believes in empowering You, the parent/guardian, to take an active role in your child’s academic future. The quality of your child’s education is the result of a combined effort from you, your child, and the school. As a parent/guardian, modeling the importance of academics in your household is the first step in demonstrating to your child that educational success is important. If you don’t take interest in their education, neither will they. It is important to first understand that your child is a unique individual with specific needs. What may work for one child may not necessarily be the most effective for your child. Our goal at TQ is to provide you with all the necessary information and give you the tools to begin to make educated choices for your unique child. However, ultimately, it is up to you to apply for these services and make sure that your child gets them. We understand that this process can be overwhelming and difficult, yet we believe that giving you this guidance will empower you to make the right decisions for your child’s academic future.
Q: What are the qualifications of the tutors? A: All of our tutors are fingerprinted with the NYC Department of Education and complete a full background check. Additionally, those fingerprints are run through a database on a daily basis to ensure your child’s safety. With regard to our tutors’ qualifications, we enlist tutors/teachers from various backgrounds. Our tutors’ credentials include active and retired NY State Certified teachers, degreed professionals, and college students. We try to find the best match for every child. Our tutors will have the appropriate educational background and skill set to effectively assist all grade levels.
Q: What if I don’t like my child’s tutor? A: We view every family as a customer and the customer is always right. If you are unsatisfied with your tutor for any reason, do not hesitate to contact our office immediately so that we can reassign you a different tutor. Because the tutoring happens in the home, we rely on you to communicate to us if you are dissatisfied. Please do not wait until the tutoring is almost finished to inform us of issues with the tutor. The sooner you let us know your concerns, the more quickly we can assign a new tutor. We want your child to have the best and most beneficial experience possible.
Q: What if my schedule changes? A: As soon as you know your schedule will be changing, please contact our office immediately and speak with your designated program coordinator. If the schedule change will not fit with the current tutor, we will arrange for a different tutor. For minor scheduling changes, you may contact the tutor directly. We encourage you to maintain ongoing communication with your tutor when possible to avoid scheduling mix-ups.
Q: What if my child needs a bilingual tutor? A: We offer bi-lingual tutors upon request. Please inform us of your needs and we will do our best to accommodate you. We actively have Spanish, French, Arabic, Urdu, and Chinese speaking tutors and can fill other language needs upon request. (The curriculum materials will be in English but the tutors themselves will be able to speak the family’s home language if requested)
Q: What if I cannot have a tutor come into my home, but I still want one-on-one tutoring for my child? A: Our one-on-one tutoring can take place in any public venue as long as a supervising adult over the age of 18 is present. For example, some of our families choose to meet at the public library or community center. Other parents choose to have the tutoring take place at a relative’s (grandparents, aunt/uncle, etc.) home.
Q: What if I have multiple children who need tutoring? A: If you have multiple children who qualify for free tutoring services, they will each receive separate one-to-one 2 hour sessions with the tutor. While we understand the time constraints on families with multiple children, it is essential to the success of the program that each child receives individualized attention with the tutor. A parent can request to have the same tutor for all children (this is possible only if it accommodates the tutor’s schedule and if the children are close in age) or request separate tutors.
Q: Do I need to be present for the tutoring session? A: A pre-designated adult over the age of 18 MUST be present during all of the tutoring sessions. We are not a “babysitting” service. Having an adult present ensures the safety and well-being of your child as well as a productive tutoring experience. We greatly encourage parents/guardians to be actively involved in the tutoring sessions whenever possible. This involvement shows your child that his/her educational success is important.
A: We want you to think of this as a family experience. The tutor that comes to your home can serve as an educator to the whole family. Practice your English, refresh yourself on the math that you forgot, but most of all, participating in this experience sets a powerful example for your child.
Q: Can I request a specific kind of tutor? A: Yes you can. We will best accommodate any request you have regarding language, skills, and qualifications of a tutor. We cannot assign tutors based upon gender, race, religion, etc. (Please keep in mind the more specific your tutor request, the longer it may take to match)
Q: How long does it take from when I submit my application to when the tutor actually comes to my home? A: It takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the time we receive your application to find and match you with a tutor. Please submit your application as soon as possible to allow for the DOE approval process. Part of this process is out of our hands, so the faster you turn in your application, the faster we can get a tutor to your home.
Q: If I have foster children, can they also receive free services? A: While most Foster Care/Social Service Agencies pay for home tutoring for their foster care children, many of these children also qualify for free tutoring services through the Federal No Child Left Behind Act. This Act mandates that children attending underperforming schools be given the opportunity to receive free Supplemental Education Services to help raise their skills in English/Language Arts and Math. We encourage you to read more about our SES Programs and take advantage of the opportunity to enroll your children in these additional free services with TestQuest!
Q: Can TestQuest help my child with test preparation? A: In addition to ELA and Math help, TestQuest’s curriculum is designed specifically to assist children in test preparation. All TestQuest curricula are aligned with NY State standards to adequately assist those children preparing for statewide math and reading exams, Regents, and SATs (in group tutoring only).
Q: Will TestQuest help my child with his/her homework? A: Unfortunately, due to NCLB regulations, no SES provider is allowed to provide homework assistance. Our tutors will offer assistance in English/Language Arts, mathematics, and test preparation. This tutoring time is then spent increasing skill sets that will ultimately improve your child’s academic abilities.
Q: What ages does TestQuest offer services to? A: TestQuest works for children K-12 including ELL, Special Ed. students, and students with disabilities.
Q: What if I have signed up with one SES provider and later decide I want to switch? A: Generally you can only sign up with one provider. Once your application has gone to the DOE, changing your provider choice is out of our hands so please make your selection carefully. (Under rare and extenuating circumstances, the DOE has allowed for very few transfers) |
